Spot the red flags: Tips for email safety

The Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC) is monitoring several recent reports of phishing attempts. We encourage you to remain vigilant to protect your information from scammers.

Here are some tips to help identify fraudulent emails:

  • Check the sender’s domain: Official MSAC emails will come from @maryland.gov. Be cautious of lookalike or misspelled addresses.
  • Do not share sensitive information: MSAC will never ask for money or other personal details via email.
  • Hover over links before clicking: Be cautious when investigating links; most MSAC links will direct you to our official website, grant platforms, or official media platforms.
  • Watch out for red flags: Be alert to emails with generic greetings, typos, poor grammar, or urgent requests that pressure you into taking quick action.
  • Verify before responding: If you are unsure about the legitimacy of an email, please contact us directly through the information listed on our staff page.
