Arts in Education Program Mission

The Arts in Education (AiE) Program is designed to promote, strengthen, and enhance the arts and arts education in Maryland’s schools and other community settings.  To accomplish its mission, the AiE Program:

  • Identifies and provides access to educational arts resources available outside the school system.

  • Offers financial and technical support for arts education programs in schools and community settings for the benefit of youth, adults, teachers, and communities. 

  • Assists in the professional development of Teaching Artists. 

  • Stimulates support for integrating the arts as a vital and effective element in the curriculum.


FY21 Program Updates!

In the fall of 2019 and winter 2020, The Maryland State Arts Council convened over 60 public constituents to serve as editors to re-envision the Arts in Education Program. Editors ranged from independent teaching artists, representation from arts organizations and programs, and representation from The Maryland State Department of Education Fine Arts Office and Arts Education in Maryland Schools Alliance.

Poetry Out Loud

The words of great poets literally come to life in Poetry Out Loud (POL), the literary arts program created by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation. Through MSAC support, students across Maryland are enriched by this national arts education program encourages the mastery of great poetry through memorization, performance, and competition. 


Arts Education Planning Collaborators

In partnership with the Fine Arts Office of the Maryland State Department of Education, the MSAC supports professional development for teachers, arts educators, and artists through The Maryland Centers for Creative Classrooms (MCCC).  The mission of the Fine Arts Office of the Maryland State Department of Education is to promote meaningful engagement in arts education for all Maryland students.

The arts education advocacy organization for Maryland is Arts Education in Maryland Schools Alliance (AEMS).  AEMS' mission is to ensure that all Maryland public school students have equitable access to arts education so that they can learn and achieve in and through dance, media arts, music, theatre, and visual arts.
