Artist Overview

Walt Michael & Company present concerts of roots-based acoustic string band music of the highest caliber. Considered to be a virtuoso of tremendous influence in the revival of the hammered dulcimer, Walt‘s wide repertoire ranges from old time Southern Appalachian, to Celtic, to folk, to breath-taking original compositions.

His various musical incarnations, including Bottle Hill, Walt Michael & Co., and Michael, McCreesh & Campbell, have spanned over 40 years and taken him from the coal camps of Appalachia to the closing ceremonies of the 13th Olympic Winter Games in 1980, when 900 million world viewers heard his signature composition, ”Snowblind.”

As a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, he has recorded 16 albums and instructional videos appeared at the White House, the Lincoln Center and the Kennedy Center, and has toured extensively throughout the US, Canada, Europe and the UK.

His music has been heard on ABC-TV, NBC’s Tonight Show, Broadway, BBC, TNN, CBC, OLN and PBS. Walt is joined by highly acclaimed musicians including Ralph Gordon (cello), Alexander Mitchell (fiddle, mandolin, guitar), Evan Stover (fiddle, viola, guitar) and Tom Wetmore (string bass).

Complimentary Activities:

Complementary instrumental music workshops are offered in conjunction with performances and can take place on the day of performance or arranged in a precursor or follow-up scheduling. Instrumental instruction is offered in fiddle, guitar, mandolin, hammered dulcimer and string bass, as well as ensemble instruction. Folk/community dance as well as group singing is offered as well. Fees for these programs range from $600 to $1,000.
