The contemporary quartet Otherworld blends jazz, classical, and Middle Eastern influences to create a unique sound that appeals to wide audiences. They feature original compositions by all four members, creating a repertoire with a compellingly expressive power, a unified esthetic vision, and an emphasis on soaring improvisations.
“Otherworld”, their 2015 debut recording, placed in the top 10 albums for the Global Music Awards. Otherworld has played at colleges, jazz clubs, and outdoor concerts around the Maryland/DC region; appeared on Baltimore television; performed in live streaming across the United States; and broadcast on radio nationally and internationally.
When an Otherworld member writes a song, the whole quartet collaborates on putting together the final product, pulling from the diverse background and training of each member. Concert pianist Jeffrey Chappell has performed throughout the United States and internationally with major symphony orchestras and at venues including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center.
Guitarist Jake Kohlhas frequently gigs in the Baltimore area, and he performs with J Pope and Funk Friday, a hip-hop, funk, and soul band. Percussionist Jake Marinari studied frame drum with the world-renowned percussionist Yshai Afterman in Israel. He and bassist Chris Taylor have performed throughout North America with the Baltimore-based soul musician, Bosley.
