Lydia Sylvia Martin is an exciting banjo player and singer. She hails from a Maryland traditional group, The Martin Family Band. Lydia released a debut album, Chasing the Ghost, that hit the national folk DJ charts. Fiercely adept and expressive on the banjo, Lydia plays traditional old time styles and uses a variety of techniques including overhand/frailing, fingerpicking and up-picking. She is sought after as a teacher and over more than twenty years has performed in diverse venues across the United States and in Ireland. Lydia also co-authored “Robert Johnson for Banjo,” a ground-breaking book of authentic banjo transcriptions based on the guitar transcriptions of Robert Johnson, available from Hal Leonard, the world’s largest music book publisher. Lydia recently spent several years working on the debut album, Chasing the Ghost, and promoted it with the help of music management expert, Kari Estrin. She tours actively with the support of booking agent Tory Gallery and they are booking for 2018 and 2019. Lydia also is well versed in the Maryland traditional music scene and has been a part of contra, square and ceili dance bands playing in Glen Echo, Annapolis, Baltimore and Gaithersburg in addition to her numerous solo and group appearances. Lydia still performs on a limited basis with the Martin Family and also has a reliable group of musicians with whom she collaborates for festivals looking for a bigger sound. She has a strong solo repertoire which she has taken up and down the East Coast to enthusiastic reviews and requests for repeat appearances.
