Poetry Out Loud marks its 10th anniversary of a national recitation competition this year. Co-created and co-sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, students in grades 9-12 through the analysis/memorization of poetry, build confidence and public speaking skills, while learning about their literary heritage. The Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC) and arts councils around the state hold local and regional competitions. Maryland’s previous competitors reached the final round three times at the National Finals in Washington D.C. each April.
The 2014-15 program, MSAC has its highest participation to date:16,601 students and 258 teachers!
Nationally, approximately 375,000 students will participate with 16,000 Maryland students from 52 schools in 16 counties. The 2015 Maryland State Finals hosted by WYPR's Aaron Henkin, with ukulele sensation Victoria Vox, is on Saturday, March 7, 1-3 p.m. at The Baltimore Museum of Art. Free and open to the public.
