Maryland State Poetry Out Loud National Recitation Program

The 2009 Maryland State Poetry Out Loud (POL) National Recitation State Finals will be held at Center Stage in Baltimore on Saturday, February 21, 2009 beginning at 1:00 p.m.

In partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, the Maryland State Arts Council conducts the Maryland competition. Previously a pilot program open to only two counties in Maryland, the 2009 Maryland POL Competition was open to grades eleven and twelve in all Maryland schools, both public and private. Twenty-seven schools in nine counties participated, and competitions were held at each school in the fall of 2008. County competitions will be completed in January and the school and county winners will compete on February 21 at the State Finals.

The public is invited to attend the State Finals and support the nine winning students in their bid to become the 2009 Maryland State POL Champion and an all expenses paid trip to compete in the national finals held in Washington, D.C., April 26-28, 2009.

For more information on the Maryland POL program, email Christine Stewart or call her at 410-767-6476.

To RSVP your attendance at the POL Finals, email Doreen Harmon or call her at 410-767-6555. Please be sure to indicate the number of people attending.

POL awards more than $100,000 in prizes to students and schools at the state and national levels. To learn more about Poetry Out Loud, listen to recorded recitations by previous national winners, and watch a video about the competition, visit the Poetry Out Loud website.
