The MSAC staff and Councilors, with the support of Secretary Kelly M. Schulz and Assistant Secretary Tom Riford, are dedicated to doing everything possible to offer relief in this difficult time for Maryland’s arts sector. At a special meeting on July 9, 2020, the following funding decisions were approved:
- Grants for Organizations, County Arts Development, Arts and Entertainment District, and Maryland Traditions Network will be disbursed in payments of 90% (immediately) and 10% (upon submission of an interim report) in place of a 75%/25% disbursement. This change allows organizations to receive 15% more funding as quickly as possible.
- Grants for Organization funding increased by ~$200,000 over FY20.
- County Arts Development funding increased by ~$500,000 over FY20.
In addition, the latest round of Emergency Grant funding allocated $435,000 to Arts and Entertainment Districts for activities supporting economic development, $1M to county arts councils for regranting and activities generating economic development through the arts, and ~$1.5M to organizations and independent artists for ongoing relief.
Along with these funding initiatives, MSAC has increased virtual professional development opportunities to share best practices for sustainable arts experiences. We want to be sure that, when this challenging period has passed, Maryland’s creatives are poised to respond to the changed landscape.
