Artist StatementVictoria Thompson works in a variety of mediums and covers topics and themes most often dealing with distorted everyday realities. Thompson’s work in the Astronuts series deals with deconstructing and rewriting personal histories using moments suspended in antique and vintage photographs. When separated from time and known histories or memories, forgotten personal photographs lose all meaning and leave the lives of those within them open for reinterpretation and rethinking. Thompson reimagines reality for these subjects in the distant, somewhat dystopian future using retro iconography and colors. Thompson is building a new past and, in doing so, is rewriting the future for the photographs’ subjects and their distant ancestors. 8/2013
Born in northern New Jersey, I spent my childhood studying traditional oil painting under Celestine Murphy Hoffman at the Ridgewood Art Institute. Now I enjoy all mediums, especially mixed media, watercolor, and silver jewelry making.
I follow contemporary and outsider art and I have been an active member of the Corcoran Contemporaries since arriving in DC. I strongly believe that art can be seen in the everyday and don’t distinguish between high and low.
