Artist StatementHumans collect. This desire falls outside of the boundaries of necessity. From the simple act of pocketing a seashell to the grandest of museum collections, we try to capture and hold beauty, knowledge, and memory. It is a way to relate on a personal scale to the vast, mysterious and ultimately unknowable place that we inhabit. My work explores this human drive to gather, classify and make meaning from objects.
Originally trained as a designer for museum exhibitions, glass artist Ursula Marcum has long been fascinated with the human urge to collect. She received an Individual Artist Award from the Creative Baltimore Grant Fund in 2010. In July of 2012 she was honored to be a part of a residency at North Lands Creative Glass in Lybster, Scotland led by Jane Bruce. She teaches at Vitrum Studio, a facility dedicated to kilnformed glass, in Beltsville, MD. She and her husband, Glenn, are happy to call Baltimore "home."
