Artist Statement

I am a very process oriented observational painter. Most of my recent figurative/ portrait studies are done over a limited sitting of 3 hours so I have been working toward developing quick sketches that capture an immediate likeness and have a fresh quality. I keep the surface of the canvas active, continuing to add and subtract. In dealing with the portrait I embrace the fact that my model is not a statue and will inevitably shift and relax over the length of any extended pose. I have no preconceived idea how I will execute the painting beyond the initial composition. Each painting is intuitive, fluid and painterly. The image that emerges on my canvas reveals my own intensely focused interpretation of the model in a particular place and time.
