MSAC Individual Artist Award (IAA)2019
Artist StatementThe recent paintings presented here veer from recognizable to the abstract, derived from life and led by the subconscious. I work in a wide range of images and processes, moving from printmaking, painting and mixed media, using the constraints of each medium to intercede on a painting's trajectory. The structure of collage allows for play and multiple points of view in a work, creating a channel to a subconscious narrative. Color and pattern direct these works into woven collaged elements that build on the last layer. There are many methods employed, including stenciling, printing and layering to create a frenetic, energized sense of movement that flirts with a controlled chaos of events. My explorations in printmaking, specifically photopolymer and copper etching, inform and influence my work in paint. My interest is the intrusion of each media into the other. My latest direction in paint is to work more toward incorporating mixed media, sewing and collage.
Randi Reiss McCormack Originally from Boston Massachusetts, I am an artist focusing
primarily on Painting, Printmaking and mixed media works. After completing my undergraduate
degree in Painting and Printmaking at Cornell University, I spent a year in Paris working in
various Printmaking and Painting Studios until relocating to Baltimore to earn a graduate degree
at The Maryland Institute, College of Art. I currently live and work as an artist and printmaker
focused on multiple disciplines of printmaking and mixed media paintings. I work in a wide
range of images, veering from recognizable to abstract. The world between the two is where
most of my work resides. Narratives weave loosely through this process and working in a collage
sensibility, images coalesce and collapse almost simultaneously. Currently I am immersed in
experiments in Printmaking and Painting where both disciplines inform the other.
