Artist Statement

I love painting organic shapes that are heavy with symbolism. For sometime now, its been the figure and the lotus- and frequently I combine the two. The lotus is symbolic of the human potential to rise above circumstances, whereas the human body is the ultimate vehicle to transcend experience. I like to compare my paintings to taking a stroll through a garden. Typically, gardens are filled with colors and vibrancy. On the one hand its an assault on your senses and yet, you seek it out for solitude and to clear your mind. Likewise, my figures painted in oranges, blues, marigold yellows and purple are similar to the flowers you might see in a garden. Here the paintings become the garden, and the figures become a natural part of this environment. Although you are confronted with a riot of colors there is a solitude there that beckons the viewer and encourages contemplativeness. I like the duality of the two.
