Artist StatementPetra Bernstein Artist Statement “Influenced by my history and evolving around my thoughts and emotions, my artwork is a visual interpretation of all that inspires me. My diverse ideas originate in the complexity of my mind, where I am able to create something that is unique to me and free from boundaries. Reality, imagination and abstraction all co-exist and need no explanation. The unexplained is far more intriguing, as it resides beyond the picture plane.” Petra Bernstein September 2018
Petra Bernstein, a German native, resides in Salisbury, Maryland. She received a BS from the University of Regensburg and worked as a teacher before moving to the United States in 1994. Drawn to painting and curious about art, she pursued a new path and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Salisbury University in 2007. Petra graduated Summa Cum Laude with a concentration in painting.
Petra uses both painting and photography to express her love for nature. The natural beauty of the Wicomico River offer her inspiration, as she captures the ever changing light and weather conditions on the water and in the sky. Her photography varies from wide angle sunsets to close up interpretations of the marsh. By zooming into the rhythm of the tides and the reflections on the surface, Petra portrays the Wicomico River through her own eyes.
Petra has spent the last ten years exploring various art subjects, ranging from representational works to abstract art. In addition to the human figure and dog portraits, she likes to paint wildlife, flowers and anything that inspires her. In recent years, Petra has been drawn to abstract art and has built a new body of work that consists of bold geometric blocks and stripes in varying color combinations.
“My artwork is about relationships. Every mark matters and contributes to the overall expressiveness. Often, the outcome is somewhat of a mystery to me. Some paintings show layers of my history, and other paintings show the fluidity of effortless creation.”
Petra has shown her artwork in Chelsea, New York, as well as in Bologna and Milan, Italy. She frequently exhibits her photographs and paintings in local art galleries and has won several awards for her work. In 2018, Petra had a solo show for her photography at the Salisbury Art Space in Salisbury, MD. This year, she won first place for the Wicomico County Tourism Photo Contest. In November, the artist will be showing some of her paintings in a group show in Madrid, curated by Trevisan International Arts.
