MSAC Individual Artist Award (IAA)2019, 2016, 2013
Artist StatementThe places portrayed in my paintings are silent studio settings and scenes inside my home. I am inspired to make these paintings by the light acting on everyday objects and the geometric relationships that are found in the contemporary interior. A seeming banal spice rack or sink becomes strangely captivating when closely observed and translated into a painted image. The marks that are applied to the surface of my paintings are a combination of creamy, sheer, scraped, sprayed, broadly brushed and tightly interwoven areas of paint. My paintings balance a systematic, calculated process and a visceral reaction to the subject. My goal is to create work that is captivating in illusionary effect and a celebration of the painted mark.
