Artist Statement

I create sculptural assemblages that synthesize dimension, form, color, and light. Ceramic forms serve as the structural components of my designs. Fused glass provides sparkle, color and light. I create most of the elements of each piece (all clay work, shells, stars, flowers and fused glass pieces) but also incorporate found objects and stained glass, smalti and assorted tesserae. I assemble the work on Wedi board attached to treated plywood that is sealed and edged with copper sheeting. Freestanding pieces are placed on steel bases. I make (weld) the small bases, but contract the construction of the large bases. Most of my larger pieces are designed to be placed in either indoor or outdoor settings. I find that thinking of my work in a garden or at a seashore, frees my inner child and allows me to “play” with images and ideas that may seem too whimsical for more traditional art. Each piece is designed to tell a story. I leave the details of the story to each viewer. But, I hope that the result is magic!
