Artist StatementMaryland photographer Marty Katz applies deadline news photographer skills to MD portrait photography and documentary photography. Putting subjects at ease quickly makes the difference between rote portraits and those communicating personality and essence. Marty's Baltimore and Washington DC photography has been part of four Pulitzer Prizes and three documentary awards, and he's now combining photography with video and multimedia as the gear evolves. Moving from still snippets in time to thinking about story, sound, time and editing is a challenge, but connection with those photographed remains essential.
Marty Katz left science to be a Washington DC photographer for Time, Newsweek and the New York Times, learning to shoot history on the run. In a post-print news era, his photography has moved to higher production values with more complexity. His photography has been part of four Pulitzer Prizes and three documentary award winners. Based in Baltimore Md and shooting commercial, editorial and documentary photography in Washington DC and the Mid-Atlantic region, that DC photojournalist training still applies, with rapid image creation workflow tempered by experience-based vision. Since DC photography was our training, we appreciate buzzwords, too.
