Artist Bio

Lauren Frances Adams attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and graduated with a BFA in 2002. She completed her MFA in 2007 at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She was born in Snow Hill, North Carolina, on a pig farm. She currently teaches painting at Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, MD.

She has exhibited at the North Carolina Museum of Art (Raleigh), the Warhol Museum (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania), Nymans House National Trust (Sussex, England), Royal NoneSuch Gallery (Oakland, CA), The Mattress Factory (Pittsburgh, PA), Conner Contemporary (Washington, DC), and CUE Art Foundation (New York).

She attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, and has held residencies at the Cite in Paris, France, Joan Mitchell Center in New Orleans, and Back Lane West in Cornwall, England, among others.

She is the recipient of the Joan Mitchell Foundation MFA Award, a prestigious award given every year to 10 graduating MFA students in the United States. She is a 2014 Sondheim Prize finalist with an exhibition at The Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, MD in the summer of 2014.

Recent solo exhibitions include a project at EXPO Chicago Art Fair 2012, and an installation at the Contemporary Art Museum, St. Louis. Her work about ecological disasters in America that have been caused by human activities, American Catastrophe Report, was recently on long-term view at American University's Katzen Arts Center in Washington, D.C.

Her work has been reviewed in Frieze Magazine, Art Papers, The Baltimore Sun, The News & Observer, Crafts Magazine, Artslant, and Hyperallergic.

Lauren is a founding member of Ortega y Gasset Projects, a gallery and curated project space launched in New York in 2013.
