Artist StatementLaura Carroll is a literary and performing artist. Her main literary discipline is creative nonfiction, but she also dabbles in literary fiction and poetry and has a special love for subversive retellings of traditional fairytales. Her main performing disciplines are aerial arts and classical voice, with occasional forays into dance and theater.
Laura Carroll began training as a writer and performer from an early age. As a child and teenager in Florida, she danced with Dancemoves studio and performed with kickline team Exclamat!on and with the musical theater group Pizazz. She began studying classical vocal technique in high school and continued through college, singing with the Glee Club and with early music group Voces Feminae. Her senior vocal recital consisted of early music by Monteverdi, John Dowland, and Moniot D'Arras, and Isabella Leonarda. She currently performs with UpSpring Aerial Lab, an aerial arts and theater group based in Mt. Rainier, MD.
In 2002, she won two local writing awards, the competition-based Pride Award, and the nomination-based Community Writing Award. She also earned 2nd place in the national Alliance Francaise French Essay Competition. Her writing has appeared in the Smith Global Impressions Journal, Shift Magazine, Renaissance Magazine, and on various blogs around the internet. Her travel photography has been displayed in galleries in DC and Florida. She is currently working on a book-length work of creative nonfiction about pilgrimage in medieval France.
