Artist Statement

Karen Lemmert‘s sculptural works involve mechanical orchestration and assemblage. Her work is influenced by geometric patterning and sequencing and strives to create phenomenological effect through tectonic construction.

Artist Bio

Karen Lemmert’s sculptural works involve mechanical orchestration and assemblage. It is influenced by geometric patterning and sequencing and strives to create phenomenological effect through tectonic construction. Her tinkerer mentality has been exhibited as part of the Venice Architectural Biennale 2016, 2014, at Palazzo Mora’s ‘Crossing Borders’ exhibition during the Venice Art Biennale 2015, & Artprize 2015. Recent group shows include exhibitions at Caelum Gallery (NYC), Baltimore’s School 33 Art Center, Maryland Art Place (Baltimore), Rimonim Gallery (Miami) and SODD Gallery (Louisiana). Lemmert is also a licensed architect and principal at MANIFOLD design. Architectural work include projects for the American Visionary Arts Museum, the Smithsonian, and the MTV Network and inclusion in a design exhibition at the 2015 Milan Fuorisalone. Lemmert has taught at the Maryland Institute College of Art and has been a guest critic at Parsons & RISD. Publications including the [bracket] journal, ‘On farming’ and the Tenancias Portada, ‘Tiempo, espacio, existencia.’

Lemmert received her Masters of Architecture degree from Cranbrook Art Academy with concentrations in sculpture and painting. Under Cranbrook Artist-in-Residence Peter Lynch, she participated in Sao Paulo’s Architectural Biennial. She also earned a Bachelor of Architecture degree, magna cum laude from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University, with watercolor studies under colorist and structuralist, Professor Mario Cortez and ceramic studies under Ellen Braaten.
