Artist Statement

Though I sometimes work with a mixture of materials my main media is wood. This is a material that I both choose and which I feel chose me. My interest in wood began early on when I inherited my working practices from my, carpenter father and then continued to develop throughout my art education. I use wood that I find or purchase as recycled construction material, both for my personal environmental values as well as for its accessibility, and the visual and material qualities it contains. Older woods have thoroughly dried out and are easier to work with but recycled woods also have evidence of their past existence in buildings and as furniture. My work develops through a personal stream of consciousness that reflects my diverse interests in subjects such as tacit knowledge, experience, religion, spirituality, in gesture and interactive forms. I often look at objects that are somehow designed to be manipulated by the hand or which give a sensation of movement or action.
