Artist StatementWilliam Faulkner once wrote, “The past is never dead. It’s not even past.” (Requiem for a Nun) Today’s conflicts and thorny issues are revealed through an understanding of the past. Meaning can be sought through text and identification. Painting provides me with time for silent reflection. It is during the slow, physical process of painting when my mind wanders. I imagine I am that child from an antique photograph: the boy soldier, a black child picking cotton, a Palestinian boy throwing a rock. Even though they are but static images, after research, these images open a world of associations for me. That said, I choose subjects, which explore today’s issues: racial tension, gun violence, and war in the Middle East. These paintings, both personal and universal, look at the past to help me find compassion in the present.
