Artist Statement

I began this series of work in order to better acquaint myself with the Washington DC Metro area. Having moved here from Pennsylvania, I was at first disappointed with the seeming lack of interesting photo subjects i found in my surroundings. In a world of McMansions and traffic jams, there just didn't seem to be anything worth photographing. But I soon realized that if I can't find what I'm looking for on the surface, then I need to create my own visions. I focus more on juxtapositions and relationships between different scenes or objects, and less on the straight forward view that we are so used to seeing. I use my Holga camera and 120 black and white film to make these images, and try to see each scene in terms of how it all comes together, rather than separately focusing on each individual item that comprises a given place.
