Artist Statement"Disability is a matter of perception. If you can do just one thing well, you're needed by someone." -- Martina Navratilova
Emily Kim is a young adult, an artist, and a two–time cancer survivor who has persevered through life-altering struggles that have not defined her but enhanced her spirit. Emily was born and raised in Maryland. She was diagnosed with leukemia when she was 3. Despite several years of medical treatments, her cancer returned when she was 7. Unable to find a donor in time for a bone marrow transplant, she underwent a life-saving cord blood stem cell transplant. While the transplant was successful, Emily suffered numerous complications and now has permanent and progressive neurological damage which affects all aspects of her life. Emily knows she has limitations but, more importantly, she knows she has strengths.
Art has been a source of positivity and happiness since Emily was a little girl. No matter her medical challenges, she has used art to express her feelings and to encourage others along the way. Whether she is painting or sketching, you can see the intense focus and enjoyment on her face. She meticulously creates each and every line in her trademark crisscross pattern. Although each sketch can take up to 2 weeks to complete, Emily is dedicated to each creation. Her images are cheery, whimsical, and inspirational, and she hopes that her pieces uplift the viewers spirit.
