Artist StatementThe artwork is constructed of hundreds of pieces of paper, all handmade in my studio from abaca, a plant from the Philippines and recycled cotton rag. The artistic process begins with a blending and beating of the fibers; the paper pulp is pigmented with archival color and then formed in the traditional techniques of European paper making. Inspired by the colors of the natural world, the individual strips of handmade paper are allowed to air dry so they develop a natural wave and overall texture. Assembled together, the completed pieces are minimal in design, allowing the color and texture of the paper to be the primary focus. The art becomes a visual meditation on the ceaseless change of time and nature both evocative and enduring.
