Artist Statement

Drawing as an immediate and transitive action, facilitates the visual expression of space, time and experience. Against a backdrop of increasingly sophisticated imaging technology, and an expanded use of hybrid media within the arts, the activity of drawing assumes a dynamic and shifting position between centrality and the margins. It is from this unique tension of the understood and the emerging, the learned versus the instinctual, that drawing becomes possibility. The extant potential of drawing informs all of my working processes, and allows me to continually reinvent the ways in which I can approach my subject. It is an indispensable part of my critical thinking processes, functioning as both preparatory stimulus and resolved outcome in it’s own right. Working with digital technologies has allowed me to expand my definition of drawing tools to include cameras, scanners and editing software. Most importantly, in giving broad consideration to the activity of drawing, I can afford to be less than predictable in defining my practice, which in turn will always afford me the opportunity for more playful exploration. I consciously employ a range of fragmented textual and visual elements in my work, in order to set up and investigate discontinuous shifts that exist between and through associative possibilities. Multi-layered and ambiguous, this interpretive stratum is reinforced through the material process of layering and/or dissection of the various elements employed: collage, photography, printing, stencilling, painting, drawing, projection and most importantly, their potential combination with and against one another.
