Artist StatementArtist Statement for Blandine Broomfield I paint every day because I really love to. Having started late in life, I have learned to work quickly to make up for lost time. I work with oil paint on canvases ranging from miniature to life size, painting en plein air and from life, and from my photography. My paintings are realistic/impressionist and they capture the beautiful moments of my life, but they are also cool-headed because I want the viewer to have the same opportunities for discovery, reaction, interpretation that I did. I often ask the strangers I encounter if I may photograph them in their activity in order to paint them later because the scene strikes me so strongly. I feel like I am telling the people of the future about what was amazing or touching in our world today. A few years ago I wrote to the copyright holders of the news depictions of the tragic avalanche in Italy and gained permission to do a series using the images they sent me as reference material. One of these paintings, “Probe for Survivors,” won first prize in the Maryland Federation of Art’s Working for a Living show. Also I paint many portraits, mostly of my large family. We are a in constant stream of modern life which I love to depict. My series work includes many paintings of my local lotus pond, its turtles, reflections of the sky in different things (lakes, coffee, puddles, rental car fleet), rockscapes, people working, waterscapes, scenes from a trip to France, nature journaling of animals and flowers that I encounter but want to keep seeing. Currently I am exhibiting publicly in the lobby of the WSSC headquarters, Bowie City Hall, Howard County Center for the Arts, and the Maryland Federation of Art Circle Gallery. I have received awards from the Maryland Federation of Art People Working show, Paint Annapolis Nocturne event, and the 2018 League of Innovation. Blandine Broomfield was born and raised in Maryland and lives there still. Her favorite art through the years has been impressionism and the ink illustrations in children’s books. Raising a family of ten children paused her art education until 2016, when she took several painting classes from notable artists Dorothy Redding and Abigail McBride and has been painting almost every day since then.
Her works include waterscapes, scenes of people working and modern life, rockscapes and portraits. Series include these and the Hotel Rigopiano avalanche rescue operations, turtles, lotuses, and local waterways.
Blandine was a juried artist in PaintIt! Ellicott City 2019. She has exhibited with the Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Painters Association, Maryland Society of Portrait Painters and Maryland Federation of Art, Bowie City Hall, and Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission galleries. Her work is in many private collections throughout Maryland and Virginia.
