Artist Statement

Through the exploration of objective abstraction, I challenge the relationship between tourist driven economies, natural objects and indigenous peoples. Tourist driven economies falsely mythologies and exploit nature and the traditions of indigenous peoples for profit. Example natural rock formations called geodes can be artificially colored using manmade methods, resulting in the perversion of the original colors, found in the natural formation. Also Native American culture is primarily represented by generic souvenirs sold in gift shops this these souvenirs have no cultural authenticity or vale other then being a product of consumer driven economy. These products misrepresent and add to destruction of accent traditions. I have chosen to work on paper because I view its physical properties of temporality and fragility as metaphorically related to the relationship between nature and indigenous cultures.
