Artist Statement

Sandra D. Davis works with recycled paper and items that can be used as painting surfaces that we as consumers throw away. Davis states “The common theme of my work is the story and representation of the many facets of the Afro-American female. Each piece explores rhythm, color and themes. The Art is considered “Green” or “Re-purposed”, the medium is “mixed media” which consist of paper from magazines, shredded documents, paper towels, tissue paper and gift bags along with other found papers. She incorporates the found papers with acrylic paint. The technique allows the work to take on pattern, texture and movement based on the application. The paper is bound together with gel medium directly to a texture treated surface or directly to the surface and built up with layer upon layer of papers. Sandra first started working with paper in 1999 to create gifts for family members that were unique and economical. The pieces grew from clowns and small portraits to more detailed and complex images.
