Magnolia Laurie was born in Massachusetts and raised in Puerto Rico. Her paintings and sculptures reference the landscape and the instinctive, sometime desperate human act of building. Laurie received her BA in Critical Social Thought rom Mount Holyoke College and her MFA from the Mount Royal School of Art at the Maryland Institute College of Art. She is a former Hamiltonian Fellow from 2009-2011, was a Platform Artist at the 2012 and 2013 (e)merge Art Fair in DC, and has been awarded fellowships and residencies from the Vermont Studio Center, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, the Creative Alliance in Baltimore, and the Jentel Foundation in Wyoming. Laurie has been a recipient of an Individual Artist Grant from the Creative Baltimore Fund in 2009, a Maryland State Arts Council Grant in 2011, and a Mid Atlantic Creative Fellowship in 2015. Her recent exhibitions include: Landmark at frosch & portmann in NY, A Series of Silent Remarks at VOLTA Basel, Switzerland, and the 2015 Sondheim Artscape Exhibition at the Baltimore Museum of Art. Magnolia lives in Baltimore, MD and is an Assistant Professor of Drawing at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, PA.
