Artist StatementCreshkoff’s current work explores the surprising beauty of decay and shows the rich palette of natural oxidation contrasted with the colors revealed by the action of flame on clay. The juxtaposition of unexpected materials suggest figures seen at the edge of one’s eye, while rusty angels and Madonnas; as formal as those seen in Byzantine and Flemish paintings; emerge from the neglected detritus of the workaday world.
Maggie Creshkoff is a potter who has worked solely with Cecil County clays since 1982. She lives on a farm and has a wealth of usable materials at her fingertips, due to the pack-ratting instincts of her friends and family; in fact, she founded the Trashy Women in 2004 to better share the riches of a material world. Maggie is also a writer for Cecil Soil Magazine and a recorder player.
