Artist Statement

when seen near its causes and effects, even the very dark is illuminated- revealing how lovely and odd life is. subtle things are out there speaking to us all the time if we’d only notice. tuning into these latent messages forces me to see other than i already thought- reminding me to banish assumptions and expectations. the reason i make art is to propagate this dialogue without words- laying things open to interpretation- rather than pinning them down which renders them inert. just like life, my work is a balancing process, a search for meaning, transcendence- intuition and content chance and control individual responsibility/conscience over blind faith conflict and consequences, darkness and redemption the world is always being made and torn apart at the same time- accumulation and erosion the simultaneous triptychs of past/present/future surface plane/ relief (addition)/ penetration(subtraction) prefer my marks to look as if made by time, not by me embracing/celebrating imperfections- rough plywood with knot holes freedom from judgment and categories once something is completely known- it is dead
