Artist StatementThe bodies of artwork I have been creating since 2003 contain silent conversations, multi-layered shapes and colors, found objects and explorations of deeply symbolic tiny narrative worlds. I create tiny 3” x 3” watercolor environments where worlds collide, text embellishes, time travels, and color unifies the disparate objects in each narrative block. The narrative is the underlying scale upon which the notes of each piece create a harmonious whole. Over the past 6 years, loss has been a theme that has dominated my life: death, loss of relationships, jobs, friendships, and homes. As Joseph Campbell once said, “It wouldnt be life if there were not temporality involved which is sorrow. Loss, loss, loss.” I have spent hundreds of hours deconstructing the lives of relatives who have died in the past six years including my father, my mother and my younger sister. Remnants of their lives gleaned from letters, journals, sewing boxes, tool boxes, calendars, photo albums, and every nook of their homes create the assemblages that are so vital for my healing and closure. What I am experiencing we all experience on this heroic journey of our own lives. The symbols and motifs in all of my various bodies of work inform each other engaged in constant conversations of the exploration personal feelings, the experience of being alive, the wonder and the horror…my artwork helps me reckon with the belief that all is as it should be.
