Artist Statement

I have never met an art medium I didn’t like. Any media can be an intriguing communicator and each brings its’ own aesthetic. With drawing or oil painting, we stand at the end of a long line, carrying heavy cultural baggage. I often work in traditional techniques, but want to express a cultural tone not apparent in the past. With china paint, I reclaim an archaic tradition, using manufactured materials to create a usable but precious object that often reflects back our manufactured landscape. I explore how beauty, symbol and sentiment can reconcile with a firm stance in the 21st century. Working in electronic media, I feel a mandate experiment, to push the technology of business in uncharted directions. The basis of my work is always the play of light and dark, grounded in the observation of nature, human and otherwise.
