Artist Statement

Public art is the center of my artistic interests. Each public artwork is specifically created for the concept, theme, and purpose of the project. No work is ever duplicated. It is my choice not to develop a personal signature style but to create work that both honors and emphasizes the project’s goal. Creating a public artwork is creating a gift for a community. I am the guardian and defender of aesthetic value but the art belongs to the community. Sometimes the uniqueness of my sculptures has worked against me. You will not be able to look at my past work and determine what I will design for this project. However, you will be able to recognize quality craftsmanship and unique design. While each of my works visually stands alone, having additional knowledge of the site, history, and project specifics enhances the appreciation of the work. The communities that live with my work have this additional knowledge. They have become the caretakers and proctors. Each work symbolically signifies a celebration of life and a belief in the future for each community. People have planted flowers and stood next to these sculptures for their wedding pictures. In recent years I have become active and involved in urban planning and the significant role public art can play. Before moving to the DC area I was on the Public Art Committee for the Chamber of Commerce in Amarillo, TX. Currently I am serving on the Montgomery Public Art Review Board and have served on several review panels for the DC Commission. These public art administrative experiences have put me on the other side of the public art fence and have given me essential insight. I am very aware of long-term issues, public acceptance and reactions, financial accountability, and an artist’s responsibility to coordinate and be responsive to the team as well as the community. A background in design/construction, education and 41 commissions for public art have provided me with the skills, knowledge, and experience that is necessary for public art projects. What I offer is a life long commitment to public art, public art that is unique and project specific… work that strengthens a community’s identity, creates a sense of place, and brings joy to those who view it.
