Artist StatementMy current work explores the psychological implications of a human presence within the context of a specific environment. The figures and spaces in my paintings are at once particular and universal, taken from experience, but reconfigured to emphasize the formal concerns of painting as they relate to an implied narrative. I am interested in constructing an image with a level of ambiguity, allowing for a sense of mystery to enter the work. The gestures and poses of figures connect with, and break apart from, one another and their surroundings, in overarching abstract shapes which marry the formal elements of the piece to its narrative content. Reinforcing formal relationships helps the paintings to transcend the anecdotal qualities that may result from a strict perceptual methodology. I am searching for a sense of timelessness by thoughtfully composing the image, rather than attempting to document an observed scene. I adjust color, light, tone, interval, and scale to heighten sensations, so that my works will read as more than simple observational records of isolated incidents. It is my intention that the paintings feel at once familiar and unexpected, recognizable, but unexplainable. I want each painting to be an autonomous thing, born out of a combination of observation, memory and invention, filtered through an understanding of the language of painting and art history.
