Artist StatementMy photography is focused on capturing elements of nature--primarily flowers, wildlife, and landscapes. A substantial amount of my work involves extremely close-up shots of flowers which reveal the beauty and intricacy of even their smallest elements. I do not consciously try to make a statement through my photography. To the extent there is a subconscious statement because of my choice of subjects, it is the incredible beauty of nature even in its most minute form.
I am a photographer living in Allegany County. Photography was not my chosen field, but, a hobby which has turned serious as of late. I have no formal education in photographer only the desire and thirst to learn whatever I can from others and books. I am not one to follow the "rules" of photography and some of my photographic work will prove that, but, I feel that following the rules will only place you in the same area as all other photographers and will not make your work stand out. I attribute my affinity for nature in all its forms to the fact that I grew up on the grounds of Herrington Manor State Park in Garrett County, Maryland, where my father was the Superintendent and I had nature all around me through my early years and was taught to appreciate its beauty and cherish it as a gift. I work exclusively with a digital camera which allows me not only to capture the images I compose in my viewfinder but also permits me to create photographic art. Many of my photographs are "untouched", while others I have manipulated with the assistance of a computer to produce a particular mood or effect. I am the Vice President of the Cumberland Cultural Foundation and very active with the C. William Gilchrist Museum of the Arts in Cumberland, Maryland . I am also a member of the Allegany County Arts Council, the Allegany Area Arts Alliance, and the Garrett County Arts Council.
