Artist Statement

Carolyn Martin grew up in New York City. She developed a passion for drawing while still a very small child, and from that grew a love for visual art in many forms. While at Brown University, she majored in Art, taking all studio courses at the Rhode Island School of Design. She has taught art and photography on all school levels, including college. "The works you see here are among the latest series of paintings on paper, some combined with digital photographs. All of them are based on artists and their music who have performed at the Strathmore Concert Hall in North Bethesda within the past few years, and taken before the concerts, while the musician was practicing. These are only a few of many works I have made on this theme. By adding oils to the basic image, I have tried to express the essence of the music - each with a different substance and style. After decades of working in black & white photography, in the 90's I returned to painting, worked on traditional canvasses. Then I discovered that working with oils on paper was both more exciting and more flexible."Carolyn Martin grew up in New York City.
