Artist Statement

I paint what I feel and relate it to what I have seen somewhere. I do not begin with a preconceived idea but begin by putting thin layers of paint on the canvas and building on that in layers. The painting starts to take on a form or forms and from there I proceed to make images. The viewer may not see the same image as I do, but that's the interesting part of the painting because it doesn't matter what it is just how we feel about it. For me painting is about feelings and my ability to be able to create a painting where the viewer feels comfortable. I take a similar approach to my metalsmithing. Both my jewelry and painting can be seen at barbarapliskin.com.

Artist Bio

I lived in Florida my entire life, moving to Maryland seven years ago.

After serving as the Medical Illustrator for the U. of Miami, School of Medicine for 6 years I spent the next 30 years as an art teacher with Dade County Public Schools.

I have been involved in many forms of art with a concentration in painting and later in metals. My work was shown and sold in South Florida. I am now metalsmithing and painting in Maryland. I have often incorporated my knowledge of human anatomy in both my paintings and metalwork. I try to let the medium I am working with lead me in my effort to create a piece.

I have a BFA in Fine Art and an MS in Education.
