Artist Statement

My paintings and drawings evoke a sensation of disquiet - a symptom of the chronic hum of electronic communication that has become the veiled soundtrack to our American lives. The subject matter of my work comes from frozen digital images. When I watch a video online – a movie, or a news clip – the feed frequently pauses to “buffer.” In these moments, I find my self waiting, staring impatiently at an image that is meant to go unnoticed. A reporter with his mouth agape; a woman absently rubbing her eye; a group of nameless people in a kitchen. I take a screen-shot from my laptop, and use the subsequent image as the basis for a painting or mixed-media drawing. The compositions of the paintings have the awkward structure of a snapshot. Artist Bio

Amanda Kates is an artist and curator, currently working in Washington DC. She received her MFA in Painting from the State University of New York at Albany, as well as a BFA from Binghamton University, and a Post Baccalaureate Certificate from the Maryland Institute College of Art. She has been selected for a number of competitions, and awards including the Best of SUNY Art Exhibition Series, a Residency and Fellowship with the Vermont Studio Center, and the Distinguished MFA Project Award from SUNY Albany. She was also a nominee for the Joan Mitchell Foundation MFA Grant. Her work has been exhibited in many museums and galleries along the east coast, including New York, Washington DC, Baltimore, and Providence.
